Nmuta Ngozi Okin, an Nguvu Change Leader, has urged the government at all levels to ensure that the needs of children are prioritised.
Okin, a lawyer, made the call in an interview with Daily Trust, to mark the 2024 World Father’s Day.
She said: “The government should use their power to prioritize that the needs of children are met, by making sure that all parties involved in birthing these children are involved financially and otherwise.
“The government is not doing enough, it’s not been prioritised as an emergency. The kids are in critical situations because a lot of these children don’t have basic needs. The government is not doing enough in that regard.”
On her advice to fathers, she said: “Please let us do better as fathers, it is not a thing of convenience, it’s a responsibility, responsibility is inconvenient, you have to inconvenience yourself to be able to do it right.
“So please as you celebrate, look around you, if you know you have birthed a child, please do your part for the sake of the kids.”
Okin is a passionate advocate for children’s rights and parental responsibility in Nigeria.
She has launched an online petition which aims to hold fathers accountable for providing financial support to their children and proposes criminalizing the failure to fulfill this responsibility.
