Borno begins sale of fertiliser to farmers at 50% discount

The acting governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur, has flagged off the sale of 100 trucks of fertilisers to farmers across the state at a 50 per cent discount ahead of the rainy season farming.

Flagging off the sales at the Farm Centre in Maiduguri, on Monday, Kadafur said the fertiliser subsidy of 50 per cent was to make the product affordable to farmers.

He said the state embarked on the early distribution of farm inputs for farmers to engage actively in farming to meet the state’s aspiration of self-sufficiency in food production.

“This programme underscores the government’s commitment to the critical sector of agriculture to not only improve agricultural productivity but also food sufficiency in the state.

“The availability of quality fertilisers plays a critical role in ensuring bountiful yields and healthy crops.

“Today, as we distribute these fertilisers, we are not just providing essential nutrients for the soil, but we are investing in the future of our agricultural sector and the prosperity of our nation,” he said.

He said it has become imperative for the state government to accord more attention to the agricultural sector considering the relative peace being enjoyed in most parts of the state.

Kadafur, therefore, urged the farmers, particularly those in returnee communities, to make good use of the opportunity given to them by Governor Babagana Zulum.

He also warned the farmers against selling the fertilisers, adding that the state has a mechanism to track down those who abused the opportunity.
