Medicine distributors under the auspices of the Pharmaceutical Wholesalers and Distributors Association of Nigeria (PWDAN) have decried the high rate of falsified and substandard medicines, saying it is affecting the health of Nigerians.
The group, therefore, said it was strategising on strengthening drug distribution across the country to promote the well-being of the people.
The Chairman of PWDAN, Pharm Oghenechuko Omaruaye, spoke in Lagos during PWDAN’s conference with the theme: “Enhancing Access to Quality, Safe, Effective and Affordable Medicines: The Role of the Pharma Distributor/Wholesaler in Nigeria”.
The conference brought together participants from members of the association and government agencies like the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN).

Omaruaye, who is the CEO of New Heights Pharmaceuticals, said, “We’re not satisfied with the quality of distribution of drugs in Nigeria. Our group created this platform to discuss and come up with solutions and ways to resolve some of these issues.”
He stated that the outcome of the conference would be communicated with stakeholders, especially the regulators, while forging collaboration to solve the problems at hand.
He further said, “These problems are falsified medicines, substandard medicines that have been impacting the overall health of Nigerians. The objective is to ensure that at the end of the day when a Nigerian takes a medicine anywhere in the country, what he’s taking is the right drug and when this is not properly handled from manufacturing to distribution to retail, we can’t guarantee what we’ll get at the end of the chain.”
