FG urged to fix economy, stop electricity tariff hike

The Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, better known as Ekklesiya ‘Yan’Uwa A Nigeria, EYN, has rejected any form of hike in electricity tariff.

The church says rather than increase tariffs on any essential commodity or service, the federal government should introduce subsidy on such commodities and services.

President of the EYN, Rev Daniel Mbaya, articulating the position of the church at its headquarters in Kwarhi, said, “We reject the plans to hike electricity tariff. We expect some services provided by government to be subsidised, among which are agricultural inputs, health systems and education, to mention a few.”

He said though the church told its members to keep hope in Project Nigeria, it equally challenged political leaders to address anti-masses policies with immediate effect.

“While we call on leaders to appreciate Nigerians for their resilience and patience, they should address their plight with urgency,” Mbaya added.

The special service of the EYN was an inauguration ceremony for Mbaya as president and for other principal leaders who were elected earlier in April this year.

The others who were inaugurated along with the EYN president include the EYN Vice President, Rev Nuhu Mutah Abba; General Secretary, Rev James Musa; and Administrative Secretary, Rev Timta Luka Musa.

The new EYN general secretary, in a press interview after the inauguration, said the leadership hoped to work as one progressive whole under the supreme leadership of God.

Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri who was personally in church for the inauguration service, congratulated the new leaders and wished them well.

He advised them to live above mundane considerations and work hard to make the church contribute meaningfully to the development of the church and the larger world.

The governor said, “As a government, we will continue to work with you for a better Adamawa. We remain committed to any group or institution that preaches love and tolerance.”
