The Nigeria Agribusiness Group (NABG) underscored the pivotal role of empowering small-scale farmers to engage in agriculture as a business, thereby enhancing the value of their production.
The Director General of NABG, Jafar Umar, stated this while briefing the press at the Nigeria Integrated Agribusiness Agenda held in Abuja yesterday.
He said that the majority of food producers in the country are small-scale farmers, numbering in the millions.
According to him, the small-scale farmers are currently operating at a low capacity, primarily engaging in subsistence farming, stressing the need for a transition towards a more commercial approach to agriculture.

He added that by empowering small-scale farmers and encouraging them to adopt business-oriented practices, NABG aims to enhance food production, improve access to nutritious food, and contribute to the overall food security of Nigeria.
“So, the timing is now, in fact, it is overdue; we should have been on that case before now, so we are trying to support that transition from just a farmer to a producer and to business, so we feel that it will go a long way in making our food security agenda more robust”, he said.
