Two people have been killed by a stray bullet from the police in Ekiti State.
Information gathered Wednesday revealed that the police in an attempt to control an accident scene, misfired and hit the two people who died before they got to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).
In a statement yesterday, the command’s spokesman, Sunday Abutu, explained that on Tuesday, May 28, at about 22:30 hours an accident occurred involving a Lexus car and a Jincheng motorcycle in the Omisanjana area of Ado-Ekiti.
Abutu said the command, upon receipt of the information, deployed its traffic men to the scene to ensure there was no breakdown of law and order, and as well ensure the safety of the victims.
The statement reads in part: “On getting to the scene, the operatives met a resistance as some youths disallowed them from performing their lawful duty and insisted on carrying out jungle justice. This necessitated a call for reinforcement to assist the officers on ground.
“However, in the process, one of the officers accidentally fired a shot that fatally injured two persons.
“The officer responsible for the shooting has been disarmed, arrested and detained and shall be made to face disciplinary action.”
Abutu added that while the command was already in touch with the two families of the deceased, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Akinwale Kunle Adeniran, condoled with them and assured them that a discreet investigation had commenced and that justice would prevail.
