9 arrested over illegal mining in Kwara

Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested seven suspects over alleged illegal mining activities and recovered five truckloads of minerals suspected to be lepidolite, lithium and other precious stones in Ogbomosho, Kwara State.

The EFCC said the suspects were not licensed miners and did not have the requisite authority to buy and possess minerals.

“They were also not paying royalties to the federal and state governments as required by law,” Dele Oyewale, spokesman of the zone, said.
