The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), has donated food items, cash, and toiletries to the Abuja Children’s Home, an orphanage in Karu, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The items were worth about N1,100,000, and the food items ranged from bags of rice, garri and cartons of noodles, among others.
Speaking during the donation exercise Sunday, the newly elected president of NMA, Prof. Bala Audu said the association has a very strong welfare humanitarian package for vulnerable Nigerians and has further identified orphans as the most vulnerable group.
He said NMA has decided to adopt at least seven orphanages around the country, with at least one in each geo-political zone.

He said, “We have decided to support the orphanages with foodstuff, cash and toiletries, starting from the one in Abuja in order to ensure improved upbringing of vulnerable Nigerian children, and to enable them to grow up to be good citizens of the country.”
The NMA president said the support was provided through contributions from the national officer’s committee as well as collectively from the purse of contributions by Nigerian doctors.
He added that the donations to the orphanages wouldn’t be a one-off but a sustained relationship, adding “We will from time to time have a conversation on their needs and will immediately provide support as soon as they let us know.”
The administrator of the Abuja Children’s Home, Musa Danjuma, thanked the association for the gesture. He called on individuals and organisations to continue to replicate similar, gestures to the orphanage saying it has 78 children, and a staff strength of 27, which feeds, pays school fees, and provides medicals to mention a few.
