New technology: Kano establishes 254 demonstration farms in 22 LGAs

The Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) under the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), which serves as one of the project implementation partners, has revealed that the project established 254 demonstration farms across 22 local government areas.

The farms were established to aid quick adoption of the newly adopted technologies in boosting rice production in the state. Indicators have shown a remarkable difference between the initial production processes and the adopted technology.

This was disclosed by the project’s coordinator, KSADP/SAA, Malam Abdulrasheed Hamisu Kofarmata, while explaining the achievement so far attained by the project to the team of its donors, which include the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Lives and Livelihood Funds (LLF), the Kano State Government, among others.

According to him, the project has established demonstration farms in 22 local governments of the state, with a view to practically demonstrate to farmers what they stand to gain should they adopt the new technology. He added that dry season rice production was just starting and farmers were expected to learn a lot from these demonstration facilities situated within their farms.

“As you can see, the demonstration farm here at Kura is situated in the midst of other farms, and everyone can clearly see the difference at this stage. It is equally clear that the harvest will also be higher than the other farms. This is because we have deployed new technologies we want people to see and emulate for better yield,” he said.

Similarly, in his remarks, one of the farmers whose farms were used for demonstration, said he was convinced that what SAA taught him under the KSADP project would be the key that rice farmers have been waiting for.

He explained that he was trained and was also given all the necessary inputs, adding that he was ever willing to step down what he learned to other farmers to boost rice production.
