John Makina, the Country Director of OXFAM, has revealed that the organization has enhanced social cohesion among 16 wards and 80 communities in Michika local government area, which was severely affected during the insurgency in Adamawa state in order to bring unity and reduce crisis.
Speaking to newsmen at a close-out review and dissemination workshop in Yola, ,Makina disclosed that the 11-month intervention was carried out in partnership with CRUDAN, GIZ and CEPAD.
The Country Director said the intervention aimed to improve participatory engagement and planning between local communities, the government, and stakeholders, leading to better socio-economic outcomes for the communities.
“The aftermath of the insurgency in Michika LGA caused distrust among the people, IDPs, refugees, and returnees, making social cohesion necessary. ”
He noted that OXFAM’s intervention aimed to convert the negative experiences of displacement into positive gains in terms of social-economic development that will benefit the host communities, IDPs, and returnees.
He explained that the project also empowers the citizens to address the specific needs of the target communities within Michika LGA, taking into account their unique contexts, strengths, and aspirations.
Alhaji Sa’ad Bashir, the District Head of Waza ward, revealed that prior to the intervention, there were conflicts between families, including husbands and wives.
However, since the introduction of the project, women have been actively engaged in productive work, reducing the occurrence of crises.
