Bingham varsity’s host community wants member appointed registrar

The host community of Bingham University in Karu LGA of Nasarawa State has called on the university’s leadership to appoint a qualified member from the community as their registrar.

The Gbagyi Youths Group in Karu LGA expressed their concern over the neglect of indigenous people in employment, governance and economic opportunities within the university despite their integral role in its success.

Gaza Mark Auta, the spokesperson of the group, while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, criticised the age limit (below 60 years) set for the registrar position, which they believe aims to exclude their qualified candidate.

Auta said it was unacceptable that the host community’s members were not represented in managerial roles like departmental heads, deans and other administrative positions, emphasising that such representation would promote diversity and inclusivity within the university’s workforce.

He said, “The position of registrar is crucial to the efficient functioning of Bingham University. We demand that a qualified member of the host community be appointed as the next registrar.

“This will not only ensure representation, but also bring a deeper understanding of the needs and aspirations of our community to the university’s administrative leadership. The essence is to avoid friction and misunderstanding between the host community and the university.”

The group also urged fair consideration of indigenous companies for contracts, yearly scholarships for community members and a quota system for admission.

He further said, “We emphasise that these demands are not optional but imperative for fostering a harmonious and mutually beneficial relationship between Bingham University and the host community.”
