Tinubu should learn from mistakes of past govts — Prof Omotola

A professor of political science and former deputy vice chancellor of the federal university, Oye Ekiti, Shola Omotola, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should learn from the mistakes of previous governments and address the issues that brought Nigeria to its knees.

He made the call at the 2024 retreat of the Senate Press Corps held at the weekend in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

Delivering a paper on, “The developmental impact of the executive on Nigerians from 1999-2024”, Omotola said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was characterised by disregards for the rule of law, hunger, poverty and insecurity, adding that since 1999, all the presidents have failed to end poverty despite the numerous policies.

He said, “It is too early to judge this administration because it is less than a year in office. But I think it should learn from the mistakes of the past administrations. If the executive is not doing well, the legislature should oversight.

“No one is laughing apart from my Senator here. No professor in the university today can afford a car. You have a wife and three children, your salary cannot buy you a car now, except you have other sources of income to augment.

“The government removed fuel subsidy without prior measures to cushion the effect. So many families have disintegrated. You removed the fuel subsidy and now you are removing (subsidy) on electricity, but the salary of the professor remains the same.”
