First Queen Elizabeth II memorial statue unveiled

A statue honouring Queen Elizabeth —the first one commissioned since her passing in 2022—has been unveiled in Rutland County, in the UK’s East Midlands.

The statue, created by London-based sculptor Hywel Brân Pratley, shows the late queen as a young mother surrounded by her cherished Corgi dogs. This memorial precedes an official tribute currently being developed by the Royal Household and the UK government.

The 7-foot-tall sculpture, located in the library gardens in Oakham, cost £125,000. According to Sarah Furness, the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland who commissioned the statue, the funding came primarily from voluntary contributions, with over 96 percent of the total raised by individual donors and businesses, with amounts ranging from £10 to larger sums.

The Oakham Town Council and the Oakham Memorial Institute each contributed £5,000 to support the project.
