The Kwara State Government has set up a 7-man committee to resolve the crisis arising from the remodelling of Oko-Olowo market in Ilorin South Local Government Area of the state.

The decision followed the recent protest by the marketers over the reconstruction of the facility by the council.

Some of them had alleged that the move was aimed at allocating their shops to the highest bidder.

Speaking during a meeting with the leaders of market, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, Abubakar Abdullahi Bata, said the committee had been charged to ensure all the agreed terms with the traders and council are fully implemented.

According to him, their presence at the market was at the instance of the governor after receiving the protest letters.

“I am here to allay your fears and assure you that the present occupiers would be given the opportunity to retain their shops at subsidised rates after completion,” he said.

He however, appealed for calm “as order is being restored to the market.”

In his remarks, the Babaloja General, Alhaji Abdullahi Saad, thanked the state government for its prompt intervention, adding that their fear over the remodelling, which was the main reason for their resistance towards the exercise has been dispelled.
