2 arrested for stealing containers in Lagos

Operatives of the Maritime Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have arrested two men, Okechukwu Onyewuenyi and Chukwuma Ogwashima, for allegedly stealing empty containers from the seaport in Lagos.

The suspects were arrested by a team led by SP Kenneth Ogbeifun on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

The police said, “Luck ran out of these two when a case of stolen containers was reported to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Maritime Police Command, Olofu A Rhoda.

“After a painstaking investigation, the suspects were apprehended in their hideout at the Ijegun area of Lagos State while others took to flight. Other members of the gang at large include Prince Oba and Israel Godwin. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.’’

Similarly, a 38-year-old man, Enyi Emmanuel, was arrested for stealing diesel worth N20,000 from a petrol station in the Ikeja area.

City & Crime learnt that the suspect who requested a POS machine to make payment for the diesel he bought zoomed off with his bus while the filling station attendant was trying to get a POS machine from their office.

Lagos State police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the suspect went to a filling station at Ile-Zik in a Senna bus and filled his keg with diesel worth N20,000 and asked the attendant to go get a POS machine.

He said, “He (suspect) zoomed off. Those around raised alarm. He abandoned the vehicle and ran away upon sighting a police patrol team on Airport Road.

“The vehicle and diesel were recovered while investigation led to the arrest of the suspect. He confessed to having succeeded with this modus operandi many times.”
