Reactions as FG shuts down Chinese Supermarket discriminating against Nigerians

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed off an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket.

The supermarket is situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce, along Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Nigerians, particularly on X, had called out the supermarket’s management over alleged discriminatory policy against citizens of the country.

In a viral video, a security guard at the supermarket was heard explaining that Nigerians were not allowed to shop at the facility.

He said the policy was given by their employer to all the employees from January 2024.

“Nigerians were stopped from entering this supermarket in January,” the security guard said.

One of the unidentified Nigerians who were denied entrance to the store said in the video that,

“We are not allowed to enter the Chinese supermarket. It is not a joke. We have been trying to enter the place but we heard that most of the workers there are Nigerians. If we go in forcefully, they might lose their jobs.”

This discovery generated a lot of bad feelings among Nigerians who described the supermarket’s policy as discriminatory. They called on the government to intervene.

On Monday evening, officials of the FCCPC shut the supermarket when they stormed the premises.

The development comes days after the commission closed all branches of 4U Supermarket in Abuja following the discovery of bags of rice filled with weevils.

Meanwhile, Nigerians on X have reacted to the closure of the Chinese supermarket.

@Iykeibrahim said: “Am beginning to have some trust in the Jagaban government.”

@Awelu9ce: “The place doesn’t even look like a supermarket… What must be going on in there? May God save us o”

@trevcap3lla982: “Racism inside our own country… This speaks a lot about the Chinese people… It’s so pathetic.”

@uqochukwu: “The power of social media.”

@TindeTresh: “This is the best news today.”

@Oladapomikky1: “Imagine foreigners giving sons daughters of the soil boundaries.”

@AdventurousAles: “I congratulate the FCCPC for this, it’s insanity, when you don’t allow Nigerians into the restaurant in our own land, c’mon! The height of discrimination must end, you can do that in China not in our capital territory.”

@JustOneDebbie: “Oh wow, I mean. Normally, why would you establish a company in a country and u banned the citizens of the same country from entering the company.”

@SimpleTee: “This made me so happy, the only thing the authorities have done this year that I’m proud of , them suppose deport the owner of the supermarket too.”

@ndubisi_omeke: “That’s nice. Why would a foreign restaurant established in Nigeria refuse to accept Nigerians? Who does that!”

@EmmyIfeoluwa13: “I knew that this would happen. How will u come into another persons country and restrict its citizens from patronizing ur mall. That makes no sense.”

@ItzBarbieAlmie: “This is how it should be done !! They can’t make us foreigners in our own country.”
