Cybercrime: Court sends ‘photo editor’ to prison over N15,000 in Kwara

Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin has sentenced a 26-year-old man, Usman Harun, to six months imprisonment over internet fraud and possession of proceeds of unlawful activity.

 The convict from Kogi State who claims to be a photo editor was dragged to court on a one-count charge brought against him by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

 The offence is punishable under section 319 of the Penal Code.

According to the charge, “Harun in February 2024 in Malete, Kwara State, did knowingly had under his control N15,000 in his bank account which was unlawfully obtained.”

The defendant pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him in court.

EFCC counsel, Charles Oni, prosecuted the case on behalf of the commission.  

Delivering his judgement, Justice Abdulgafar pronounced him guilty with an option of N100,000 fine.

He ordered the phone used to perpetrate the crime which he benefited from should be forfeited to the Federal Government.
