Plateau communal clash: Police deploy operatives to affected communities

The Plateau State Police Command on Monday said it has deployed police officers to Mikang and Langtang local government areas, where a communal clash between the Montol and Taroh ethnic groups resulted in the death of at least nine individuals over farmland disputes.

During the conflict, houses and barns were destroyed, and cattle were rustled.

The spokesperson for the state’s Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, said the swift response of the police helped prevent further escalation of the crisis.

Meanwhile, Plateau State governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has urged security agencies to decisively deal with the perpetrators of the communal clash and pursue the sponsors to face legal consequences.

He emphasised that such actions undermine the government’s efforts to promote peace and unity among citizens of diverse backgrounds.

He urged traditional, community, and religious leaders, along with key stakeholders, to initiate dialogue for a peaceful resolution of disputes.

Similarly, Senator Simon Lalong, representing Plateau South senatorial district, called for a thorough investigation into the root causes of the clash and urged citizens to prioritise peace and dialogue in resolving differences rather than resorting to violence.
