Activities in universities across Kano State have returned to normal as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) suspend their 7-day warning strike.
Daily Trust reports that the strike action was suspended following a directive from the national body of the associations.
According to SSANU Secretary at the Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Nura Garba, the suspension is temporary as the national body is billed to be in a meeting with the Federal Government and other stakeholders in government on Wednesday.
“We suspended the strike because there were interventions and concerns shown to us by some authorities in government. So, we are sitting on Wednesday with the government and after that we will review their commitment and see the next line of action.
“After review of their commitment, that is when we will decide to go for an indefinite strike or not,” he said.
Daily Trust reported that the week-long strike action in some of the universities in the state affected activities as students missed exams when the associations shut the gate of BUK.
However, it was gathered that activities had returned to normal as all units and departments had reopened for full operations in universities across the state.
Part of the issues that led to the strike action are re-negotiation of the 2009 agreement – the issue of 25/35 per cent of salary increment, minimum wage areas and the issue of the N50 billion the government promised as earned allowances.
