2-month-old abandoned baby found in Lafia

A Good Samaritan has found a two-month-old baby abandoned by a yet-to-be identified woman in Angwan Maina area of Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Daily Trust on Sunday learnt that the baby was found within some residential houses behind the Correctional Centre, opposite Government Secondary School Maina, Lafia, lying on the ground naked.

Narrating the incident to our correspondent, Mr. Yakubu Sule explained that he found the baby at about 11.30pm on Friday night.

He said he saw an image that looked like a human being and decided to move closer only to discover it was a baby.

According to him, he looked around the area in search of the mother but all efforts proved abortive.

He further said he took the baby home, which initially caused a serious debate between himself and his wife, because he had woken her up from sleep and pleaded that she breastfeeds the baby in order to save its life.

“I, my wife and all our neighbours couldn’t sleep as the baby could not withstand the excessive heat and cried all through the night. I had to carry the baby and play with, and that was how it slept off.”

Yakubu Sule’s wife, Mrs Aisha Yakubu, said as a mother, she had to accept to breast feed the baby because denying the baby breast milk might lead to sudden death.

The ward head of Angwan Maina, Lafia Local Government Area, Mallam Idris Muhammed, confirmed that the matter was reported to him at about 7.15am on Saturday by Sule, saying that the issue had been reported to the police as necessary measures were being taken to ensure the safety of the baby.

Efforts to get the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Ramhan Nansel, proved abortive as several calls to his mobile line did not connect and he did not reply to the text message sent to his mobile line as at the time of sending in this report.
