The passing of His Excellency, Alhaji (Dr) Bukar Abba Ibrahim, the first civilian governor of Yobe State, is a significant loss not only for Yobe State but for Nigeria as a whole, particularly in the political arena.
Governor Ibrahim passed away in the Holy City of Mecca after battling a prolonged illness at the age of 74. The news of his demise came as a shock to us all, as we received the information from a family source and his immediate media adviser, Alhaji Ibrahim Jirgi, who issued a press statement in Abuja.
Bukar Abba Ibrahim was the most humble and level-headed leader-politician I had ever encountered and worked with. He was a man of great political character, who dedicated his entire life to grassroots politicking. His death came at a time when Nigeria’s political system is in dire need of such a brilliant mind.
Bukar Abba Ibrahim’s political journey began as a former Commissioner for Works and Housing in the old Borno State. He then went on to become the first civilian governor of Yobe State from 1991 to 1993. He was later elected as the executive governor under a new political dispensation from 1999 to 2007, representing the APP/ANPP tickets. Following his tenure as governor, he served in the Senate chamber for two terms from 2007 to 2015.
The late governor’s contributions to the development of Yobe State and Nigeria as a whole cannot be overstated. He was a visionary leader who prioritised the needs of the people and worked tirelessly to improve their lives. His dedication to grassroots politics ensured that the voices of the common people were heard and their concerns addressed.
Governor Ibrahim’s demise is not only a loss to his immediate family but also to the entire nation. He leaves behind two wives, nine children and numerous grandchildren. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of politicians to serve with humility, integrity, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of the people.
Today, as we bid farewell to a great leader, we must reflect on the lessons he taught us through his actions and words. Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim’s death serves as a reminder of the importance of selfless service and the need for leaders who prioritise the well-being of their constituents above personal gain.
The passing of Alhaji Bukar Abba Ibrahim is a significant loss to Nigeria politically. His dedication to grassroots politics and his unwavering commitment to the people of Yobe State and Nigeria as a whole will be sorely missed.
May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future leaders to serve their country with humility and integrity.
