Hisbah arrests 14 suspected prostitutes, others in Yobe

The Yobe State Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-orientation has arrested 17 persons for alleged prostitution and use of illicit drugs.

The suspects were arrested during a patrol by the Hisbah department in collaboration with other security agencies in the Damaturu metropolis.

Parading the suspects to newsmen, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alhaji Yusuf Hassan Yusuf, said the accused comprised of nine females and five males.

He said their immoral activities contradict the teachings of Islam.

The permanent secretary said some of the suspects would be handed over to security agencies for prosecution while others would be taken to clerics for counselling.

Meanwhile, the Kebbi State Hisbah Command on Monday said it recorded over 350 cases of rape, abduction, drug addiction and family issues within eight months.

The state’s Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Architect Muhammed Sani Aliyu, while speaking with journalists in Birnin Kebbi, said they also recorded cases where mothers dumped babies that were less than seven days and other cases of lost persons and abductions within the same period.

He said the Hisbah command was working in collaboration with security agencies, lawyers, and clerics to ensure that its activities did not go contrary to the dictates of the constitution.
