Abia Warriors shock Pillars in Kano as Sporting Lagos hold Doma Utd

Abia Warriors yesterday defeated Kano Pillars at the Sani Abacha stadium by a lone goal in the match day 23 fixtures of the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

Pillars who have had an indifferent season so far suffered its ninth league loss when Daniel Ijeh struck a thunderbolt in the 78th minute to ensure his side secured its tenth win of the season.

The visitors have never defeated the ‘Sai Masugida’ side away from home in the NPFL, last doing so in the FA Cup with a 1-2 victory in 2018 ensured their have now lost their first home league game this season. Pillars have now lost back-to-back games for the first time in the league since losing 1-0 to Plateau United 2-1 to Wikki Tourists in the 2021/22 season. Their last home loss was a 1-0 defeat to Rivers United on March 2, 2022.

In the same vein, Abia Warriors ended a run of 17 games without an away win in the league. Their last away win was a 4-2 win over Dakkada in February 4, 2023.

In another match played, Akwa United stunned defending champion, Enyimba 3-1.

Philip David had opened the scoring in the 6th minute while Sani Suleiman doubled the lead in the 50th minute.

Mbaoma Chijioke who scored his 11th goal of the campaign cut the lead from the penalty spot but Suleiman ensured all three points when he scored his brace in the 96th minute.
