The Senate on Wednesday summoned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe, to appear before it over the rising casses of killings, kidnappings and general insecurity in the territory.
This followed the adoption of prayers contained in a motion sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko (PDP Delta North), on kidnapping and killing of his senior legislative aide, Barrister Chris Agidy in Galadimawa, last year.
Wike and Igwe are to appear before the Senate on a date to be communicated to them through the Clerk of the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, according to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
Akpabio said, “The FCT minister and police commissioner will appear before the Senate in closed-door session on a date to be sent to them by the Clerk of the Senate.
“Their expected appearance before the Senate, is to hear from them, measures and strategies to stem the ugly tide of kidnapping in the FCT.

“Incidences like kidnapping and killing of the SLA of Senator Nwoko and some residence of the FCT are worrisome and must be stopped not only in the FCT, but in Nigeria generally.”
The Senate also adopted other prayers after exhaustive debate on the motion by Senators that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, should urgently increase security patrol and surveillance in Abuja and the entire country to stem the tide of kidnapping.
The Red Chamber charged the IGP to see to the installation of CCTV cameras in strategic locations in Abuja and provide a 3-digit number for effective emergency response.
The Senate also charged the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that the emergency number is active and functional to enhance swift security response.
