LP crisis: Police release nat’l chairman, Abure, on bail

The Nigeria Police Force Zone 5 has released the embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, on bail.

The police said Abure was arrested on Wednesday for attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, and related offences following a petition against him by a former LP Youth Leader, Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia, who was expelled in the wake of the crisis rocking the party in 2023.

But the LP national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, confirmed that Abure was released early on Thursday morning.

The spokesman for the police zone, Tijani Momoh, also told Channels Television that Abure and others were released on bail on Thursday around 2pm.

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the party in the last election, Peter Obi, and its caucus in the House of Representatives have condemned the arrest, describing it as humiliating.
