Niger probes pupil’s use of abusive language in debate

The Niger State Government says it will take disciplinary action against the management of Kasimu Primary School, Agaie, over the alleged use of vulgar and violent language by a primary five pupil, Abdul-Kabiru Abdulkadir, in a debate competition.

In a video making the round on social media, the pupil in the debate opposed the motion titled ‘Voting should be made compulsory’.

Consequently, the Niger State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education said the boy was coached to use vulgar and violent language in his presentation.

The ministry, in a statement by its information officer, Jibrin Usman Kodo, said “Such behaviour is not only unacceptable by the ministry but also goes against the values of respect and decorum that should be upheld in educational settings.”

He said the use of vulgar and violent language not only reflects poor orientation for the individual pupil but also for the school and the educational system as a whole.

The commissioner has vowed to investigate the incident further and take appropriate disciplinary action against those responsible for coaching the pupil to use such language, he said.

Daily Trust gathered that the Head Teacher of the school, Maryam Shehu, and her assistant, Sani Fogaci, had been summoned by government officials but our correspondent could not confirm if they appeared before the disciplinary committee.
