International horse racing tournament delights Kano residents

The Kano turf club witnessed a grand horse racing tournament involving Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Niger Republic. The tournament brought together horse racing enthusiasts to the ground which has a history as far back as 1903.

In attendance were representatives of the Kano state governor, the Emirs of Kano and Zazau as well as the Estu Nupe for the two-day event held on 10th and 11th of February 2024.

Lamido from Alhaji Yusuf Bello’s stable in Niger Republic won the governors cup in a time of 1 minute 51 seconds to clinch the grand prize of N300,000.

Other top races competed for are the Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s cup, Emir of Kano’s Cup , Etsu Nupe’s cup and Emir of Zazau’s cup.

Chairman of Kano Turf club Alhaji Tajjudeen Dantata expressed happiness that the sport of horse racing has stood the test of time in Kano state.

“There is no other place in the country that deserves to host this event than Kano despite numerous challenges in the immediate past. The sport requires more attention from the government as there are several benefits to the people,” he said.

Kano residents expressed happiness on more attention paid on the Kano race course. They used the opportunity to call on the government to look into regularising horse racing which could help curb dangerous horse racing youth engage in at various places within the state.

A spectator, Ahmed Rufai who is a butcher laments: “A month or two ago there was an accident involving a horse and vehicle on the streets. This problem of riding within the streets is a disturbing one. So we are happy that the government paid attention to this issue”.
