Over seven persons in Delta State are intensely lobbying Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to be appointed the next chairman of Delta State Sports Commission.
Report had it that Chief Tonobok Okowa, a younger brother to the immediate past governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Godwin Adode, Ughelli North Local Government Chairman are among those vying for the job.
It will be noted that Okowa who is also the president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) will cease to be the Sports Commission chairman on February 11 2024. He is said to have recruited his brother, the former governor to lobby Oborevwori for the position.
Others vying for the seat are a current member of the Sports Commission board Ernest Juweto as well as Harrison Ochulor a sports journalist. However, the favourite for the position is Onos Oborevwori, a relation of the state governor.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria, Prince Harrison Jalla has called on the governor to deviate from the old norm of appointing the sports commission chairman whereby past governors appoint non-professionals and close relations to pilot the affairs of such a sensitive sector.
“The Governor must Jettison the norm of appointing Brothers and In-laws as Chairmen of the Delta State Sports Commission if His Excellency wants to relaunch Delta State as the Cradle of Sports in Nigeria,” he said.
