30% of world newborn deaths occur in Nigeria – N/east health commissioners

The Committee of Northeast Commissioners of Health has sought support from the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the geopolitical zone.

It said 30 per cent of mortality of pregnant women and newborn babies in the world occurred in Nigeria.

The committee chairman, Prof. Baba Mallam Gana, stated this during a meeting with the leadership of NEDC on ways to improve the health sector in the region.

He said the alarming rate of maternal and newborn deaths and other maternal-neonatal issues bedeviling the health sector in the northeast are critical to address.

“The health sector in the Northeast is in a critical situation at the moment, especially when you look at it from the perspective of maternal and neonatal perspective and children who are being born.

“The NEDC has done a lot in the health sector, but as a matter of fact, right now we need NEDC the most.

“We are not unaware of the commission’s interventions, such as upgrading the eye hospital to an international standard. Now, we will work together with the NEDC to improve the healthcare of the people of the North-East,” Gana said.
