AFCON: NPFL resumption shifted to Feb 14

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has postponed the kick-off date for the second stanza of the 2023-24 season.

The resumption date which was initially fixed for January 4 is now fixed for February 14 as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the NPFL, Prince Davidson Owumi, in a letter to the participating clubs said it was due to the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

The body also emphasized the need to capture the undivided attention of players, fans, and stakeholders amid the prime African football spectacle that is the AFCON.

“Be informed therefore that a new date of February 14th has been decided for the commencement of the second stanza of the season,”

“This decision was reached to capture the full attention of players, fans, and all other stakeholders at this time of prime African football tournament,” the letter stated.

The statement stated it regrets any disruption this new arrangement would cause the schedule of various clubs, while urging all clubs to make necessary preparations for the new kick-off date.

At the conclusion of the first round matches, Lobi Stars of Makurdi are leading the log with 36 points, Remo Stars are in second spot with 35 points while Doma United are third position with 32 points.

Meanwhile, Gombe United, Sporting Lagos, Bayelsa United and Heartland FC of Owerri ended the first stanza in relegation waters.
