The 24-year-old Napoli striker had a sterling performance against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Saturday, assisting Ademola Lookman to smash home the first goal to send the Eagles to the last eight.

Speaking about his desire to win the trophy, Osimhen said, “I want to win something with this great squad.

“I want to give Nigeria something that they will remember. I’m giving everything to come home with the [AFCON] trophy.”

Osimhen, however, disclosed that the players have not been at their best with the games so far, even as they qualified for the knock-out stage with three goals.

They beat old rivals Cameroon 2-0, a game considered by Nigerians as the best played by Super Eagles since the start of the competition.

“I cannot lie, we haven’t played the best of our football yet. I think the whole team has this mentality of winning, we want to win,” Osimhen said.

“For me, we are more like a family than just players. So for me, it is important to have this mentality of winning.

“I want to give kudos to my defenders. They have been focused since the start of this competition. We also have a good goalkeeper [Nwabali]. We want to keep this momentum going.”

Osimhen, the African Player of the Year, got his only goal at the ongoing 2023 AFCON in the first game against Equatorial Guinea which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Super Eagles will face the Palancas Negras of Angola in a quarter-final fixture on Friday.
