Gaza: Israel showing disrespect for ICJ, int’l laws – Palestinian ambassador

The Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, Abdullah Mohammed Shawesh, Sunday, lamented that Israel has continued to show disrespect for international law and the International Court of Justice in the ongoing war in Gaza.

Daily Trust reports that Israel has continued to launch attacks on Gaza, killing at least 174 people and wounding 310 despite the ruling of the ICJ asking it to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.

The Ambassador, who spoke at a media roundtable organised by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), noted that Israel has been very clear in its position that it will not abide by the decisions of the ICJ.

“Israel made it very clear that it will not abide by any judgment by ICJ. The Israeli Prime Minister declared that he will not abide. Israel and its officials have accused the ICJ of antisemitic bias. They are very clear in this regard,” he said.

He noted that while Israel and its allies would want the world to believe that the war in Gaza was caused by the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, he noted that the continued disregard for international law as well as the occupation of Palestinian territory and killing of her people are parts of the issues to be addressed.

Shawesh, who claimed that there are historical evidences of Israel military killing Palestinians for fun, said more than 33, 000 people, mostly women and children, who had nothing to do with Hamas, have been killed by Israel since the October 7 attack.

He lamented that the United States of America has continued to supply ammunition to Israel and frustrated all efforts to achieve a ceasefire.

While calling for respect for the two-state solution, he called on the international communities to enforce immediate ceasefire in order to stop the killing of Palestinians on daily basis; deployment of humanitarian aids as people are dying of starvation; release of all hostages by all the parties; setting up of investigative commission to investigate events before, during and after October 7 as well as respect for international laws.

He said the war on Gaza by Israel has not achieved either of the objectives of the Israeli government, noting that the hostages’ releases were achieved through diplomatic means.
