A human rights activist and former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Sani, has bemoaned the failure by successive governments in keeping their promises to Nigerians.
Sani spoke in Abuja while making his contribution during the 21st Daily Trust Dialogue and presentation of African of the Year Award.
He lamented that in every election cycle, politicians would make a plethora of promises but once elected, they would renege, giving excuses on why they couldn’t fulfill such promises.
“Each time politicians are struggling for power, they present themselves as magicians that have solutions to all the problems in the country. They would promise that N1 will be equal to $1.

“They have the template of addressing all our socioeconomic challenges but some months into power, you will hear them telling Nigerians they should lower their expectations; they are not having the magic wand to turnaround all the problems of the country”, he said.
He said successive administrations, from former President Olusegun Obasanjo to the present government, had come up with various economic policies, which had yet to impact on the citizens positively.
“It seems we have become a perpetual guinea pig of economic experiments in the hands of politicians. Government after government, are all starting from afresh. Every government said they want to build the foundation. The last government made a lot of promises but left with trillions of debts and put over 133 million Nigerians in poverty”, he said.
