Rangers defeat Rivers Utd in rescheduled NPFL match

Enugu Rangers yesterday at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu defeated Rivers United 1-0 in a rescheduled matchday 14 fixture of the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

Rangers who suffered a narrow defeat against Akwa United in Eket last week were bullish as they faced a Rivers United side who are unbeaten in their last three away meetings against them.

‘The Cathedral’ which has remained a fortress to the home side experienced a cagey ten minutes with both sides squaring up evenly at each other.

As the game progressed, the home side began to take control with the visitors on the back foot.

Efforts by Enugu Rangers to get at least a goal in the first half failed as it ended goalless.

Upon resumption of the second half, the hosts through Kazwen Ogunleye took the lead from a well-struck free kick to lead 1-0 which was enough to secure all maximum points.

Meanwhile, the league body has released some statistics from the NPFL games played so far.

According to stats released by the NPFL Competitions Department, there was a total of 139 wins recorded over the period and five outstanding matches yet to be played.

The stats show that Remo Stars Sikiru Alimi is the most prolific scorer at the halfway mark of the season with 11 goals but didn’t indicate how many matches he played out of the 19 his club was involved in.

Ten away victories were recorded and 46 draws which saw 271 goals scored by home sides and 108 scored by clubs on the road.
