Daniel Bwala, a presidential campaign spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar during the 2023 elections, says he informed his ex-principal before his meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
Daily Trust had reported how Bwala recently met with President Tinubu for closed-door talks, after he declared his availability to work with the Tinubu-led administration.
According to him, if supporting Tinubu meant joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), he was ready to join the party and dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, Bwala said: “I informed Atiku Abubakar I was going to see the President. After I had seen the President, I informed him (Atiku) that I had just seen the President and he replied, ‘Thanks Daniel for notifying me’.”
Bwala said his decision to now support the current administration does not mean he betrayed Atiku.
Bwala gives reasons for dumping Atiku for Tinubu, hints at return to APC
“It’s absolute nonsense for somebody to say because I said I will support President Bola Tinubu therefore I betrayed Atiku,” he said.
While the lawyer refrained from explicitly stating his current party affiliation, he made it clear that Tinubu did not promise him any cabinet appointments during their meeting.
However, he expressed willingness to work with the president in any capacity that serves the interests of the Nigerian people.
Daily Trust reports that the legal practitioner was one of those who defected from APC after the party unveiled a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise, he had argued that Tinubu’s announcement of former governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate, was not “good news for the APC.”
He argued that the APC had chosen “politics over unity” and ignored the values of “inclusivity, tolerance, common prosperity and diversity.”
