Dr Suleiman Ramon Yusuf, a former executive secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), has urged the commission to go beyond pronouncement and investigate degree programmes especially from Francophone countries.
Yusuf stated this while responding to the Federal Government’s suspension of accreditation of degrees from Benin Republic and Togo during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday.
Following an investigative report by Daily Nigerian indicting a university in Benin Republic where a first degree was obtained within weeks, the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday suspended accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.
“Beyond suspension, we need to do more because this is not the first time this matter is coming to the fore. Now, we need to do something different. Many of these francophone countries don’t have national quality assurance agencies.

“I have to appreciate the quick response by the Minister of Education to suspend accrediting such degrees. Many of these francophone countries have benefited so much from the dubious degrees they give to Nigerians and that is why Africa cannot achieve the same level of mobility that people enjoy in Europe under the Erasmus programme.
“You can’t investigate such a matter without the involvement of NUC. I would like to suggest that NUC should be active in this investigation because these degree meals are flourishing.”
