The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) has said it is set to plant more than 10 million trees across Kano State in the next four years.

The Kano State ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Dr Dahir Muhammad Hashim, disclosed this in an interview with a radio station in Kano.

Hashim said the measure is aimed at curtailing desertification and mitigating the effects of climate change, as well as enhancing soil fertility and reducing evapotranspiration rates.

“In the process, 2.5m trees would be planted annually beginning from this year. The tree planting would also be conducted in collaboration with civil society organisations and other sister agencies,’’ he said.

The trees, he said, are to be planted across the nooks and crannies of the state, including major metropolitan roads to enhance air quality.

He assured that, unlike previous failed moves to check deforestation, there is absolute commitment from all players to achieve the set target.

“The scheme, which is a tripartite initiative of the World Bank, Federal Government of Nigeria and Governments of the 19 northern states, is also working to make available fuel-efficient cooking stoves to check indiscriminate felling of trees for firewood.’’
