Plateau killings: CSOs demand action against perpetrators

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), Plan International Nigeria (PIN) and Action Aid Nigeria (AAN) have expressed sorrow over Sunday’s coordinated attacks in Plateau State leading to hundreds of deaths and destruction of millions of naira worth of property.

In separate statements Friday, the leaderships of the organisations demanded practical actions against perpetrators and other proactive measures to prevent recurrence.

The head of CHRICED, Comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi, while condemning the Plateau State violence and killings, said that kid gloves approach won’t stop perpetrators until an iron hand measure was taken to protect Nigerians.

He said, “It is absolutely traumatising that Nigeria has degenerated to the point where it is now a certified killing field and a place where human beings can be so routinely wasted while life goes on as if nothing has happened.”

He further said that in an ironic twist, the present administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made a promise during their election campaign to take decisive actions against terrorism and various forms of insecurity.

On his part, the Country Director of Plan International Nigeria, Mr Charles Usie, said that the state, and especially the communities had experienced decades-long crises deeply rooted in ethnic, political, economic and religious differences, thus the need for relevant authorities and stakeholders to work at finding a lasting solution to the underlying issues.

Also, the Country Director of AAN, Mr Andrew Mamedu, said the horrific incident laid bare the glaring incompetence and insensitivity of both the federal and state governments, as well as the security agencies to swiftly respond to human rights violations.
