Forty patients of Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) and Rift Valley fever (RVF), among others, have undergone free surgery sponsored by the Access Bank as part of its corporate social responsibility in the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano.
The zonal head, Commercial Banking, North, Access Bank, Alexius Ayabam, while visiting the patients, said the initiative was part of giving back to the society as the bank goes beyond not just commercial activities but looking after people in the immediate environment they operate.
He said, “We are here in partnership with the hospital in respect to corporate social responsibility. As a leading financial institution we strive to support people from whom we have patronage. So, in terms of corporate social responsibility, we are here to carry out surgeries. There are basically two surgeries that have been lined up, Thompsils and VVF and RVF.
“We are quite happy because the women are the fulcrum of the economy. Once she is okay, then the home front becomes okay and peace reigns. The financial institution can only thrive when the economy is good and when people who are customers are healthy enough to push.

He said 25 surgeries were done for VVF while 15 done for thomsils, adding that as many as it is possible can be done as the bank is now in partnership to sustain the practice.
The state coordinator, VVF and one of the few surgeons in Kano, Dr Amir Imam Yola, while appreciating the efforts, hoped that it would continue, as according to him, the cases are on the high rise.
“This is a welcome initiative. Actually, sponsoring surgery is one step towards alleviating the suffering of these young men and girls. We welcome the idea and hope it would continue,” he said.
