Major General Y.Y. Kure dies at 84 in Kaduna

Major General Yohanna Yerima Kure popularly referred to as Y.Y. Kure is dead.

He died at the age of 84 after a protracted illness in Kaduna.

He was a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council between 1985 and 1987 at the onset of Ibrahim Babangida’s administration and was a member of the Supreme Military Council of Nigeria from 1983 to 1985 during Buhari’s military government.

Kure is a former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Amour Division of the Nigerian Army Enugu and 2 Mechanised Division, Ibadan, and also Director of Army Special Duties and Plans.

Gen Y. Y. Kure gained prominence when he crushed the Maitatsine fanatical group in Kano in 1980 and that of Yola in 1982.

He was born into the royal family of Mallam Manchaik Kure and Mallama Tawok Kure on April 22, 1939, in Kurmin Musa, Kachia LGA, Kaduna State.

Young Kure was enlisted into the Nigerian Army through the prestigious Nigerian Military Training College (now NDA) in 1963 and was commissioned as an officer in 1964.

General Y.Y. Kure will be buried on December 1, 2023, in his hometown of Kurmin Musa, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, according to a statement by the family.
