Plateau Assembly declares 2-month recess

The Plateau State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that the declaration of a two-month recess by the state House of Assembly was a ploy to halt the swearing-in of its lawmakers who were declared winners by the Appeal Court in the state.

The allegation comes a day after the former speaker of the house, Moses Sule and his deputy, Gwottaon Fom, resigned from their positions, and thereafter, the house elected a new speaker and deputy.

Our correspondent reports that the new speaker, Gabriel Dawang, a member of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) had after Tuesday’s plenary, declared the two-month recess, a development that the APC, in a statement by its publicity secretary, Sylvanus Namang, said was a plan to stall the swearing in of the new lawmakers of their party following the appeal court judgement that sacked PDP lawmakers in both the national and state assemblies.

“From every indication, the governor is spoiling for a war with the very likely incoming APC-led government as his action is clearly designed to operate a parallel legislature as the 22 APC members are expected to operate under a one-man riot gang as “Speaker” for the two months because even when the House is on recess, legislative functions will take place under oversight functions,” Namang added.

When contacted, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the governor, Gyang Bere, did not respond to inquiry by our correspondent.
