Osun CJ: Judiciary workers picket high court

Members of the Osun State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union (JUSUN) yesterday picketed the state’s High Court in Osogbo to register their grievances against the sacked Chief Judge of the state, Justice Adepele Ojo.

During the picketing, JUSUN members demanded improved welfare of their members.

The JUSUN Chairman, Comrade Oluwagbemiga Olakunle Eludire, alleged that the embattled CJ denied the staff of their benefits including wardrobe allowance.

He also lamented that Adepele refused to reinstate some staff she suspended after the court exonerated them.

Eludire said the union resulted in picketing after various internal mechanisms explored to drive home their demands failed to yield positive results.

The CJ was removed by the State House of Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct and corruption but this has generated controversy.

While the legislators in Osun State rely on the provision of section 292 of the constitution on their power to remove the CJ, lawyers said such power cannot be exercised without involving the National Judicial Council, given a precedent decision of the Supreme Court.

Two lawyers in the state, Mr Alfred Adegoke and Chief AbdulFatai AbdulSalaam said the decision of the Supreme Court has vested the power in the NJC to partake in the process leading to the sack of a CJ.

Adegoke and AbdulSalaam said due process should be followed in the probe and sack of the CJ to avoid bad precedent.
