Navy begins operation to tackle illegal fishing

 

The Western Naval Command has deployed several ships and helicopters to fight Illegal Unregulated and Unreported Fishing (IUUF) along the county’s waters.

The deployment of the ships and helicopters marks the flag off of exercise EJA EXPRESSION by the Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy.

It was gathered that the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) put the nation’s fish and seafood market at about $25.78 billion and that it is expected to grow annually by 13.94 percent from 2023 to 2028.

Speaking at the flag off of the exercise at NNS BEECROFT jetty in Lagos, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan, explained that the name of the Exercise is taken from both the Yoruba and English languages in which the first word EJA means Fish in English and that it is a multi-faceted outing.

He said the exercise is targeted at eliminating illegal unregulated and unreported fishing which, according to him, is significant in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).
