Sokoto govt set to end child malnutrition as 297,832 new cases recorded

The Sokoto State government has reiterated its commitment to end child malnutrition in the state.

The Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu in charge of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Muhammad Bello, stated this during the presentation of 2023 Sokoto, Katsina and Zamfara (SoKaZa) SMART Survey and Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Acute Malnutrition (AMN) Analysis.

According to the survey, Sokoto is among the states with the highest number of malnourished children.

Bello noted that the present administration in the state was committed to reversing the ugly trend.

He commended UNICEF for its continuous support to the state.

The Nutrition Specialist of UNICEF in Sokoto field office, Abraham Mahama, who presented the report, attributed the development to poor feeding practices, insecurity and poor funding.

He noted that many farmers were displaced because of banditry which has grossly affected food production in the state.

“So the Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) in most local government areas in the state is high,” he said.
