Kwara gives scavengers Dec 31 to register or quit

The Kwara State Government has disclosed that it will regulate the activities of scavengers, starting with registering them, to ensure the security of lives and property and increase the revenue drive of the state.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman, during a meeting with the association of scavengers in Ilọrin, said, “The present administration is not comfortable with your operations in the state as they are causing insecurity.”

The commissioner explained that the registration of the industry was for proper recognition, with each of them bearing an identity code and uniform.

Ndanusa warned the scavengers to stay away from criminal activities and operate by the environmental laws, failure of which would attract the full wrath of the law.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Association of Scavengers, Mallam Musa Umah, reiterated their readiness to comply and operate by the law governing their business.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Hajia Afusat Ibrahim, informed the association that their registration would close on December 31, and full enforcement would commence January, 2025.
