ASUU donates relief materials to IDPs in Sokoto

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has donated relief materials to 250 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Sokoto State.

Distributing the items at the Kasuwan Daji IDPs’ camp on Tuesday, the National President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, noted that the gesture was part of the union’s initiatives to reach out to the underprivileged people in the country.

“It is a programme designed to relate with the masses and downtrodden in our communities. We distributed the same items to IDPs in Kebbi state yesterday (Monday),” he said.

Represented by Professor Sunny Ighalo, the President appealed to the authorities to do whatever they could to return the IDPs to their communities.

Osodeke, however, urged Nigerians to assist the IDPs in the areas.

“They need our help so that in no time they will be able to go back to their homes,” he said.

ASUU Zonal Vice President, Northwest, Professor Abubakar Sabo, said the union was not only after the welfare of its members but also other segments of society, particularly those in dire need of assistance.

According to him, the items donated were purchased by the members without any support from the government.

The chairman of ASUU at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Muhammad Almustapha, said the sum of N50 million were earmarked for the purchase of relief materials for the people displaced by banditry in the Northwest.

The items include, rice, beans, cooking oil, seasoning and bag of sachet water otherwise known as pure water.

The Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu in charge of the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, Nasir Kalambaina, said the state government was working assiduously to restore peace to the areas affected by banditry.

“We are also working towards providing befitting shelters to the victims and the subsequent return of some of them to their respective communities,” he said.
