Classified information leakage jeopardises fight against insecurity – Reps

The House of Representatives has mandated its committees on National Security Intelligence, Information Technology, and Defence to carry out forensic data storage, data protection, and the flow of information of all the security agencies in the country.

The committees are also expected to inspect the level of data security operated by the Nigerian Immigration Services (NIS), Nigerian Customs Services (NCS), the Nigeria Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and other data collection agencies.

This followed the adoption of a motion on matters of urgent public importance by Adedeji Stanley Olajide at the plenary on Thursday.

Presenting the motion, Olajide said the flow of unauthorised and classified information and documents to the public domain is now almost at the discretion of government officials. 

He said, “Our security agents are being attacked by bandits while going for rapid response due to leak of information and national security is also compromised.

“If the Chief of Army Staff decries the leakage of classified documents appearing on social media, then there is a serious issue at our hands as a nation and it is our duty as legislators to call for forensic investigation of all our security agencies.”
