Declare State of Emergency on malaria, Reps urge FG

The House of Representatives has called for the subsidisation of malaria drugs for citizens if they cannot be made free at all government health centres.

The Chairman of the House Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Control, Amobi Godwin Ogar, made the call at the inaugural meeting of the committee on Thursday.

He said the rate of malaria infections in the country continues to increase, with many Nigerians affected by the disease but unable to afford drugs.

He expressed concern about the proliferation of fake and sub-standard malaria drugs in Nigeria, adding that the committee would identify their sources and impose penalties on them.

He warned that producers and distributors of fake and sub-standard malaria drugs will have no hiding place under their watch.

Ogar said the committee will critically examine the operations and processes of the Global Fund in relation to their intervention mechanism in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
