FG restates commitment to autonomy for LGs

The federal government yesterday said financial restriction being faced by the 774 local government areas across the country was hampering the growth of the third tier of government.

It promised to revitalise the local government system by promoting autonomy, capacity development and community engagement through frequent town hall meetings.

The Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Zephaniah Jisalo, disclosed this in Abuja at a two-day workshop with the theme, “Local Government Administration in Nigeria: Reviewing the Trajectories, Trends and Projections in Today’s Economic and Political Realities.”

Jisalo, who was represented by the Director of Inter-governmental Affairs of the ministry, Mrs Patience Ehujo, explained that the federal government would also adopt robust implementation mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability in resource allocation and utilisation at the LG level and collaborative partnerships.
