255 athletes to represent Ogun for Youth Games in Delta

Ogun State government yesterday bid farewell to 255 athletes for the 7th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

Daily Trust reports that athletes from Ogun will be featuring in 25 sports including athletics, badminton, boxing, chess, cycling, darts, football, para table tennis, rugby, scrabble among others with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Dr. Qudus Yusuff urging them to be good ambassadors of the state.

He gave the charge at Ijeja Sports Complex in Abeokuta, while addressing departing athletes, saying their conduct would portray the state in good light.

Yusuff reiterated the state government’s resolve to actively engage the teeming youths in physical and mental activities, as well as attaining personal development, noting that sports would foster peaceful co-existence among young people from diverse backgrounds.

The permanent secretary encouraged the athletes to showcase their abundant sporting talents as young people from diverse backgrounds, saying, “Physical activity in young people contributes to developing healthy bones, efficient heart and lung functions, as well as improved motor skills and cognitive function.

“Be dedicated to what you have gone there to do and do not be distracted in any way. Your welfare will be taken care of, so put in your best, as your interest is paramount to your success”.

Responding on behalf of other athletes, Miss Olamide Orekoya from Ijemo-Titun High School, who will be participating in Wrestling, expressed her eagerness and that of her colleagues to partake in the games.
